Me & My: Glunz & Jensen PlateWriter 2000

Stuart Way, co-owner of Speedprint UK, has reduced company production times by up to 50% with this easy-to-use, low-cost metal platesetter _____________________________________________________________

What does the machine do?

The PlateWriter 2000 produces metal litho printing plates direct from the computer without the need for any processing chemicals.

Why did you choose this particular machine?
Because of the low cost, small size and ease of use for experienced and inexperienced staff.

Did you look at any other similar machines?

We looked at a few secondhand CTP systems.

Why did you make the purchase?
To replace an older manual system.

What features do you particularly like?

The ability to print from any operating system and programme. The ease of use in the RIP is also beneficial.

Is there anything that you dislike?

No.

Is there anything that you wish it had that it doesn’t?

No.

How fast is it?

We can produce an average of eight plates an hour.

How reliable is it?

It’s a very reliable machine.

What’s the quality like?

The quality is exactly the same as a conventional metal CTP system. We have compared both side-by-side and cannot find any difference.

How easy is it to use?

Very easy. The hardest thing is printing from the programmes.

How much time or money has it saved?
It has cut production time by 30%, but the cost of producing a plate on a consumable basis is about the same. However, when taking into account the labour cost, then you could say we have saved about 50% on production time.

Has it won you any new work?

No.

Would you say that it offers value for money?

Yes, very much so.

Were there any difficulties experienced during the installation or after?

We have had no difficulties at all. We have been running the PlateWriter 2000 for around four months now and we have not required any contact with technical support or needed any other services.

What about the pre- and after-sale service?

It has been excellent.

Who do you think the machine is right for?

Small offset printers running anything from 50 to 600 plates a month.

Under what circumstances would you buy another?

If we needed to accommodate an increase in plate size or capacity. _____________________________________________________________
